ESP8266 have internal GPIO pullup and for using physicaly button we must make pulldown (for pressed state), because this widget use inverted value.

One more question... having made the app end user - which hides some of the settings- I can't figure out how to go back to the developer mode?

Sorry, this is second bug.
You must deinstall and install app again for temporary resolve this issue.
