#49713 OK cool thanks so apart from what I was corrected on:

So, No, the right pins (Drain) should not be connected to GND, it should be the left pins (Source).
(so, maybe that was your wiring problem)

The R2 on previous schematic is not needed with MOSFET (it was there only in the case of a NPN transistor), so the gate can be connected to GPIO2 directly as long as you have the PullUp for boot process (not shown here). - See more at: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10295&start=16#sthash.xkAPmBLp.dpuf


the rest of my understanding of the schematic was correct? Still not sure what the 12v is.

#49716 Still getting no where with this, my set up is now as follows:

GPIO2 goes to first mosfet and also has the 47K resistor going to 3v rail.

Left hand of first mosfet going to 3v ground.

Right hand of first mosfet going to 5v rail.

Right hand of first mosfet also going to all three legs of the 2nd mosfet.

Left hand of 2nd mosfet going to ground.

Right hand of 2nd mosfet going to IN of relay

VCC of relay going to 5v

Ground of relay (tried 3v and 5v ground)

In the circumstances above the relay turns on, the ESP8266 has a very weak red glow which flashes as if it is dieing and does not boot up.
