And make sure the RX and TX voltage levels are 0-3.3V and not 0-5V.

Ok Brilliant!!

So I to test the serial port communication I used the following code and flashed it to my ESP8266.
This simply reads the UART0 and prints the contents (if there is any).

Once flashed, I sent some data to the serial port, via the serial monitor to make sure that it was receiving/transmitting and the right UART was being read correctly. Viola it output back what I sent!

I then connected my RFID reader to the TX pin and read the tag. Sure enough the tag ID was read successfully.

Sorry if this sounds basic, but programming is alien to me and something like this could help someone else like me. At least I know that the ESP is now reading the data wirelessly to my PC.

Is it possible to assign the ESP8266 GPIO pins as software serial, like software serial function in arduino

I have the same problem! Do you perhaps have a breadboard layout of the right solution?
