Recommendations for suitable power supplies

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone knows of any suitable, inexpensive power supplies which would work well with the ESP8266. At the moment I've been running mine off an arduino, but really want to make it stand alone as much as possible. I also have the ESP communicating with an RFID reader which requires 5v, so if the power supply had 5v out (or ran off of 5v from USB or something) that would be ideal.

I use a module based on LM2596. These are available at around $1 and work well for 5V -> 3.3V conversion. And for 5V i use some tiny ac/dc modules found on dx.com among other places.

the easiest will be a linear power regulator, like a lm1117.

A switching regulator like the lm2596 need a good filtered on the output. Dunno if the chinese modules (i think you have one of those:)) have that. Use as much caps as you can ;)

What about those fully integrated DC/DC converters like:

o Torex XCL202 B331BR-G (about $1.26 each, 2V-6V input, 400mA 3.3V out)

? (searched on Digikey, never tried it)
Difference with LM1117 seems to be that the latter isn't quite geared for very-low-power-mode battery use (has minimum 1.7 mA operation). The XCL202 is rated in %efficiency (about 86%, up to 92%) and really low minimum currents.
