Flexible, even good, but not so ideal.

There is no need for a step-up since the esp will be happy with the 3xAA even when they are about to die at around 3v.

9V battery has a very little capacity. The smoke detector power consumtion is almost nothing.
ESP8266 is a hungry beast because of WIFI, peak at 200-250mA. I expect no more than few hours in case of continous run.
