It has these weird half cut pads on the sides, what am I supposed to do with these? Also, which soldering iron tip should I use?

The exception would be if you're implementing the HSPI port overlap technique or if you have an ESP device that runs the Flash chip in other than quad mode. I haven't verified this but I've read elsewhere that the 12Q runs the Flash chip in dual mode.

A simple online search got me lots of information. You might want to look at http://www.instructables.com/id/Getting ... 66-ESP-12/ as an example of how to use the pads.
