According to spec this particular module should be powered with 5VDC (connected to DC+ and DC- inputs).
Basing on https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/lo ... gic-levels and https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/lo ... gic-levels you should be able control this module from ESP8266 with 3.3V logic (connected to IN input).
