I purchased one but the chip inside has 9 pins on each side rather than 8. any ideas on the pinout or the best way to check?

I think you mean it is using a custom module that has 9 pins on each side. Unfortunately I don't know the pinout. The best way would be to remove the shield and probe the chip for the pinout.
