Although it would be fun to implement old-style Hayes AT-commands and a speaker making phone modem noises.

Realtek or Ralink are expansive wifi usb adaptors compared to this chip

I think less than €2 for a USB-WiFi adapter is pretty cheap (and it's ready to use).
Or if you want a RealTek with external antenna: €2.24
