Well, I got it to work, it was simply a matter of doing a extern define of the function system_deep_sleep_instant and using the latest Arduino ESP8266 release, 2.3.0
BUT..,.
Now I am getting a large current spike and longer run time. Please see attached current traces. Correct data is sent in both instances, only different is current spike, which appears to be RF_CAL executing.
This also occurs with the standard ESP.deepSleep (xxx, WAKE_NO_RFCAL) in anything after 2.0.0
