I am new to the nodemcu world. I got a nodemcu module, it reads v0.1. I have prepared my arduino IDE for the nodemcu and installed it as per the instructions on Github. When I connect my nodemcu it is not detecting port. I am using ubuntu 17.10, Arduino IDE 1.8.5. It seems to me that I have to install CH340G driver on my system. I don't know how to install this on my ubuntu. Please help in with this.

I use ubuntu with nodemcu boards. Works fine without installing any drivers. Mac and Windows must do that.

Try a different USB cable. More suggestions in the following article.
