Newbie programming question

I have several of the ESP8266 NodeMCU LUA development modules and they hookup and work very easily via the USB cables. I am wondering about an easy way to program the ESP-01 boards. Do you just have to build a small circuit with a USB interface where you can plug in the ESP-01 boards? Or is there some way to use the NodeMCU boards? Thanks for any pointers/advice on this.

Can you provide a link to the boards you purchased? My NODEMCU boards all have ESP-12E not ESP-01 modules.

You can use an adapter like this to program an ESP-01 without trouble.
(Please note the orientation of the ESP-01 PCB: it has to point out/extend away from the adapter)
