you do not have to use the buttons if you set the correct board (NodeMCU) .
Trying to use it as "generic" be aware to set DIO mode and nodemcu reset mode.
Speed should be ok up to highest setting.

Thanks for the information. I did check the terminal activity and do not see any communication and I cannot issue any AT commands. I checked this using Putty too.

I am thinking I may have a dead one.
