Hmm, so not many have actually been able to get the Dev Environment going - Kinda defeats the purpose of having open source, no?
Anyway, I'll have a go at getting the winxp VM going when I get some time this later this week.

Note: The request is still open, if anyone who has can compile successfully, to report on what memory saving can be made by deselecting modules from compilation ;)

Hi, you can use lubuntu from espressif.
last week we are working hard on using linux gnu toolchain.
now the nodemcu build 20150106 if compiled by gnu tool.
and We have dropped windows xp vm from now on.

the only issue may be the missing files of simcall-**.h, and it's now can be downloaded from:

https://github.com/espressif/esp_iot_rtos_sdk/tree/master/extra_include/xtensa
