Hi,
i don't think it hangs. At me the first install took many many minutes. You simply need to be a little patient and wait.... :D

I have let it run for six hours. I don't think it's going to happen. It must be something on my side, but where can I look? I've tried the Event Logs. Any other ideas?

I have the exact same problem as Kooth. Boards manager (in 1.6.5) hangs up saying "Downloading platforms index...Downloaded 22kb of 44kb" I tried your suggestion of using "staging" version-same result and hang. I have reloaded 1.6.5. I have tried the .git download procedure outlined but my DOS does not have a git command. I am running on Windows XP. Trying to get a Sparkfun ESP8266 shield going.
thanks.
