I am also confirming that I had the error:
Board generic (platform esp8266, package esp8266) is unknown, when using both 1.6.6 and 1.6.7 - so am going back to 1.6.5....a well.

Having installed V1.6.5, pleased to find that it is working for me - ESP joy again.

XTAL, you are correct about pins IO 6 to 11, they are used internally on ESP boards to link to the flash ROM chip. So they are not brought out to external pins.
