This is all related to TX/RX connections. Those switches (or on some other board variants : jumpers) let you determine if the ESP is talking to USB-TTL or the AVR by crossing or not the TX/RX of each devices.

I don't own this board either, but I presume you should simply choose "Generic".

I use this choices ESP8266 Generic, and Arduino UNO, and I receive an error with simple code of blink.
