The issue with that is it would require downloading the EDP8266 files and my connection is...terrible. I can do it, but it will take hours. :cry:

If you changed sth it would have to be somewhere in hardware/esp8266/cores/esp8266 ...
e.g. the core_esp8266_si2c.c

what is more likely that you were lucky with the placement of the cables or sensors, humidity etc, that made your previous experiments partly successful.
