FWIW This circuit seems to work well for me. I found that without an external pullup on reset it would not work properly. On my E12 versions the reset line sits at just over 2.2v without a pullup. 22K ohms seems ok. Its also worth fitting a push switch to the reset line for easy reset. The diode is an old germanium detector diode which has a very low forward drop, but a schottkey will do just as well. I found that std silicon diodes of the 1N4148 variety would be inconsistent.
