Hi All,
please check this new formatter utility that should fix (I hope) the problem of the 4M esp modules.
Unzip this file and overwrite the existing one in the folder 'Flasher\Build\Format_Flash'.
This is more verbose, you should have a the following sequence of messages
- "Formatting utility. This is useful to clean the ESP module"
- "Formatting in progress .."
and after ~30 seconds
- "Formatting Completed!" or "Format Failed!"
Let's try and let us know.

This could be where I'm going wrong... when I download the flasher program - it just runs - as far as I can see I don't HAVE a folder structure to put the .BIN file in .... can you advise?

When you run the flasher it should create a folder in the same directory called build in the same directory as the flasher.
