If the native power supply voltage works then that is the best choice.

Well the native power supply voltage is actually 5V5 but that would mean having a 5V5 input on the sensor pin, when it is recommended not to even use 5V. I could drop the signal voltage down with a suitable resistor but 1) why, when 3V3 works just fine? and 2) what if I want to use a different sensor -the resistor on the pin might be the wrong size ?

Sorry I wasn't clear. Native = CPU (ESP) power supply.

Ah, 3V3 then. Yeah, it seemed reasonable to me too.
