I have since placed a button connected to ground up to the rst. It's uploading the script fine, but it takes a few tries sometimes.

Trust me ! Add some pullup to RST, your problems will be gone ...

Here is one found on the net, but I strongly suggest to also add PullUps on both GPIO0 and GPIO2 :
