To compile the current version you must use the following boards manager link.

I have had trouble compiling under the latest staging version.

http://arduino.esp8266.com/versions/1.6 ... index.json

That is the latest version of the esp8266 arduino stuff that will work to compile the basic interpreter and have it run as expected.
