PC connection lost when ESP connected to router

Hi, I recently acquired some ESP8266s from Sparkfun. I used an Arduino UNO with the chip removed as a serial interface with my PC to flash the firmware to 9.2.2. It is powered by a regulated battery source. I am able to send and receive AT commands (via CoolTerm) no problem. I do a AT+CWMODE=3 and a AT+CWLAP and can see all the wifi networks near my house.

However, it never fails, as soon as I AT+CWJAP="myrouter","mypassword" the wifi connection on my PC is completely lost and requires a power cycle on my router to get going again. What could be causing this?

I forgot to mention, my router is a Belkin N300...am I supposed to connect to an ad-hoc network on my PC instead of directly to the router?

Tried again with new 9.5 firmware, same result...internet connection on other devices is lost until router is power cycled.

Is there logging capabilities on your router? Does it save or otherwise record any error messages itself? I'd be looking for things like duplicate IP address.
