ESP8266 not responding on commands

I followed this guide: http://ez-gui.com/manual/multiwii-clear ... Connection
I have chip's RST connected to 3.3v through 1k Ohm resistor (as in the guide).
I have everything same except CH_PD not connected to 3.3v, RST and GPIO0 are not grounded, and no capacitor.
I spent like 4 hours figuring out how to make it work.
And all what I got is sometimes (it did 3 times) I got something like this [01]'strange symbol'[03]'strange symbol'[03]'strange symbol' and so on. Every message was different.
It did not respond on any of my commands (AT, AT+GMR).
Am I doing something wrong? or board is dead?

Well, I just did straight upload standard firmware. I was successful.
Now it responds on commands, finally :)
But when the wifi board loads it sends strange strings:

Well, the chip will not even boot unless CH_PD is up, and both GPIO0 and GPIO2 must be properly connected, too. I also had a problem similar to yours, when I tried to power the ESP from the 3v3 line in the FTDI; but It could also happen if the baud rate is wrong.

Hi

Me just got this esp-01 module working . had connected ch-pd and rst pins to 3.3v using 10k rsistor . worked for me . but wonder why it gives INVALID after booting :( .
