I'm using a break-out board, but I'm not sure how to identify it definitively. Here's a link to an image of my relevant eBay purchase:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/27255360 ... l140/p.jpgThere are many of these available. It's the one with E+ E- A- A+ B- B+ pins on one end, and GND DT SCK VCC on the other. I looked at the Sparkfun link, but of course it isn't the board I have.
Yes, I know the ESP won't like 5v, but I welcome being reminded!

Would it work to supply separate 5v power to the board and put a Logic Level Shifter on the DT and SCK lines? If so, would I need a common GND between the 3.3 and 5v devices? (Sorry, I'm a software guy and have only pretty basic electronics knowledge.)
Update: I see that my Logic Level Shifter has HV/LV and GND/GND lines, so presumably I can simply connect VCC and GND to those, and my question about common GND goes away. The shifter is one of these (if the eBay link works for you):
