I've put an instructable up describing a esp-12 based plant waterer

This uses deep sleep to give extended battery life.

It includes a library wkEvents to help organise a weekly schedule of activities

This is really nice work well done.

It could be worth using one of the ESP32 boards that have a capacitive sensor and lipo battery holder all built in.
This would make it much more of an integrated solution.
