I'm guessing the PIR sensor was reacting to the WiFi RF signal.
RF can affect anything that might rectifiy it. The signal from the ESP is pretty strong and close.

I just ordered some of these PIR sensors that say they can be powered by 3.3v. If they work they they would be pretty nice because of their super small size and matching input voltage. I'll post an update once I get a chance to test them out.
