Agree the price is high compare to ESP-12.
My project NodeUSB is based on ESP-12E, add LDO, power switch, lots of headers and case for just a little more,

Buy them from Aliexpress. The prices are nearly the same than for a classic ESP-12.
I don't buy much from Ebay anymore. Alipay is cheaper, and the buyer protection works better.

Compared to what? Paypal is free for buyers, and I've always been fully refunded for items I didn't receive. Does Alipay gives you money on top of that or what?
