Okay, more questions:
1. Which pin is EXT_LFC, and
2. What to I have to strap to what to choose the external clock? VDD_RTC to ground?

EDIT: Also, is this specific to ESP8266EX? I can't find mention of this on some older documentation:

I don't see any pin to connect an external Low-Frequency Crystal

I got out my divining rod and it pointed at pin 5.

Pin 5 is VDD_RTC, and AFAICT, it is only a power supply pin used when the chip is in deep sleep mode to feed the internal RTC clock, it is not an RTC clock input.
