@jonsmirl: interesting; link is for 5V though, not nearly as many or as cheap for 3.3V. Good for desktop, want battery-operation too

Design your board to take in the 5V and then make 3.3V. The USB standard is 5V so everything uses it.

These Adjustable DC-DC buck converters are great, only .0025mA quiescent current.
Cheap @ $1.22 + free shipping, I put a 1000uF cap on the output. Powers my 3.3V Pro Mini, ESP8266, DS3231 RTC, DS1820, 10K thermistor, and 2.2" ILI3941 TFT screen. Doesn't even get warm.
Those LM2596 based convertors can eat up around 18mA quiescent current.
