- Tue Sep 15, 2015 2:33 am #29065 IR remotes massively overdrive their LEDs to get the required range, routinely putting upwards of 1-2A through them, but at an extremely low duty-cycle - maybe 1%. That way the average current is still below the 20mA limit, but the pulses are much, much brighter.
