If you tried my exact instructions (open a serial connection @74880 baud and power cycle or reset your ESP) and you get above result in your terminal, something is definitely wrong.
Are you sure that nothing other than your USB -> serial converter, like for instance a LED, is connected to pins 2 (TX/GPIO1) and 7 (RX/GPIO3)?
