It was a long time ago, I can't remember what exactly was going on.
I did'nt use boards from sparkfun but cheap Chinese ones, anything was slightly different.
In any case, I think it was a different problem than yours.
But my experience with the multiplexer was very good, simple and straightforward.
Ok, you have one part more, anyway I would recommend it - spares the nerves
