All,

I am new to the ESP8266 and had a couple of questions.

I purchased this one

https://www.adafruit.com/product/2471

I want to use it as a wireless WIFI modem to take old school AT commands and hook it up via a MAX232 to an old 8 bit computer. I have seen it done already.

If I am reading correctly the Vbat is for 3.3 volts to power the module, but the V+ can take a 5v DC supply (the pins used to program) The V+ will pass 3.3 volts over to the 3V pin for the Max232. I am wondering if I can just use the V+ and Ground pins to power the unit since it will be standalone and using WIFI and I will not be programming it afterwards unless I need to update it then I can simply use the USB to Serial TTL cable to hook up to it.

Advice ?
