My sketch (using WiFi and wifiserver) runs fine when I upload It via the USB port and remain connected. But when I disconnect the laptop and use a USB power supply, the WiFi does not work anymore. The rest of the sketch seems to run. Any ideas?

Just a wild guess, since you didn't provide any real information about you sketch or setup:
Do you have a "Wait for serial loop" in setup()?
