Reverse engineering of flash image

I have a few flash images of IoT devices using ESP8266 with some custom OTP contents. I would like to understand how the firmware works (e.g. how the memory looks like). Can someone give me some advices how to load the spi flash image correctly into IDA Pro or some different disassembler?
