ESP8266 says ready but does not respond

I purchased 4 ESP8266 ES...d modules from MakerFocus through Amazon. The modules boot up, display some info at 74880 baud and then print 'ready' at 115200. But from there it will not respond to anything. No AT commands, not even return. I've tried putty with a ctrl-j after return and Esplorer. I don't want to do development on the ESP8266, just use it as a module. What does the ready prompt mean? What commands will it take? I checked my usb to serial adapter and it is putting out 3.3V. I've tried 2 of the 4 modules, same thing.

Any help is appreciated.
