Well, based on the list of the SDK updates, I can see multiple enhancements for nodeMCU - such as ability to change MAC address, hidden SSIDs, change the DHCP range of IPs for DHCP server or ability to disable DHCP client and set static IP.
However, the closed source of the firmware is starting to bother me a lot, too, so I'll probably have to learn C and start working directly with the SDK and current buildchain.
