Just a quick note that the this Arduino IDE for ESP8266 works flawlessly with Visual Micro. Using the free MS Visual Studio Community edition and the free version of Visual Micro you end up with a way richer development environment (better syntax highlighting / type ahead / ...).
The standard Visual Micro setup routine works as described - just pick the ESP8266 Arduino IDE directory and disable the debugger :)

I'm trying to get it working. Which version of the Arduino IDE are you using? 1.6.1 or 1.6.3? And which set of ESP extensions are you using?

Update: I found the following post http://www.esp8266.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=2391, which allowed me to get it working with 1.6.3.
