I'm trying to figure out how to compile and install esp8266 arduino using just the command line on linux. The instructions say to download the arduino IDE and then to go to the board manager preferences window and use that to install the esp8266 module. How can I do all this on a head-less box (and no, I don't really want to install X and remote it)?

I don't know how it works, but IGRR made a pre-announcement this morning that he will use this package soon :
