Attiny85 to reset ESP8266

I have an Attiny85 that will trigger RST on my ESP 12E, it works to reset the ESP upon LOW-HIGH output from PIN 1. It works fine when the Attiny is plugged into USB and my ESP is plugged into USB but when the attiny is connected to a 3.3V (or 3.7V) battery and my ESP is connected via USB, it will not trigger the RST. I suspect it is a voltage problem, 5V coming from USB but only 3.3v from the battery? Any ideas? Thank you. ( I have no electrical or circuit background by the way so please forgive my ignorance)
