and maybe try using reset instead of ch_pd, somehow I have the feeling ch_pd does take longer to "start up"

sorry for disturbing you. The reason was 2 defective FTDI adapters.
Fortunately I have ordered more from China, and therefore I can say “third time lucky”.
And: “Generic” works for ESP-03.
