I think many folks on this thread already have the basics working, but it took me rather a long time of searching through multiple places to figure how to get this set up. It turns out to be quite simple now thanks to the hard work of many people. In just a few months, it's gotten much easier. So I made an instructable for it.
This shows how to set up the ESP8266 to control WS2812 LEDs directly when programmed via the Arduino IDE (or WS8212 LEDs according to this thread).
