The measurements I have done on several ESP-12F units indicate that the ADC is roughly equivalent to a 7 bit ADC (even though it gives a 10 bit result) but also the full scale varies by about +/- 5% from device to device.
So for simple measurements on tracking battery voltage or for checking a LDR for a threshold then it is OK, but if one needs accuracy and precision then one should be using an external unit.
