Perhaps I overlooked it but I don't remember seeing any mention of the size of the Flash chip you're using for your ESP8266 Wifio device. There isn't much difference in cost between a 512KB and a 2MB chip (e.g. W25Q16BVSSIG) and it sure is nice having the extra space for SPIFFS or whatever. I'm currently using the Olimex ESP8266-DEV board that has 2MB Flash chip.

Indeed, there is not much price differences between a lot of Winbond Flash chips. I've have purchased alot of those recently.
Not only between W25Q40 and W25Q16, but also with W25Q32, and I've even found some W25Q64 cheaper than W25Q32 on eBay.
So, W25Q64 (8MB) will be handy ...

Once they go to production the 2M part can be used it connected in QSPI mode....
