ESP8266 Community Forum

From what I gather there is a version of the esp01 that has a 1MB flash and should work for espbasic v3.x ...

The version is as it says in the title the ESP01S

I have one on order will update and let you know if it works when I get it via slow boat may be a while but maybe some one out there can confirm this already?

Yes indeed; the easiest way to identify the 1 MB version is the fact that it usually is a black PCB, as against the blue one for the 512 KB.

Another attractive idea is to buy either, and ramp it up with chips of a higher capacity. They're very cheap, and fairly easy to do.

hrmmm yes I was unsure of any compatibility issues this seems cool though any spi flash will work then.
