Unlike most people
With e.g. monitoring of both SDA en SCL lines and proper return values that give a clue about what's happening when it doesn't work. The code from Espressif itself is a very bad example. It just barely works.

I have been using the arduino esp8266 package to compile and the arduino wire library.
Will have to see how well it works.
