So does anyone know if the Arduino IDE needs to be actually installed into the system or would the unzipped non-installer version work?

I've never messed with the Arduino IDE but it's probably time I do.

I had never heard of that but followed the instructions here:-

and installed on a flash drive.
Was able to compile the usual "blink" sketch - but a quick try with Espbasic started giving errors about include files not found. Will try again tomorrow.

You need the libraries from the libraries folder that comes with the source code for esp basic.
