there has been a project which was discussed here in the forum some time ago. This guy has written the Android app PiRelay which does exactly what you want to do. Although the app is closed source, it is quite simple to find out how it works

The msgbranch can be used on the esp and app inventor has both visible and hidden web browser objects that can be controlled by buttons in the apps gui.
